Welcome to the Tales From The One Land

TalesOneLand_SM_1000x500_August2018

As we prepare for the full launch of the High Plains Samurai Roleplaying Game, tales of intrepid heroes fighting back against tyranny have already begun to spread. Wanderers riding the Salvation tell of a lone warrior defending his favourite bar from a local gang seeking access to the tunnel running under Serenity Falls.

Tales From The One Land is a series of actual play recordings (both audio and video) revealing the action-packed excitement of HPS. Each session provides new players creating their own personal exploits with original characters and improvised storytelling to reveal one shared version of the One Land… a kind of HPS cinematic universe. For our first release, Todd and Vince (editor on HPS) sit down for a Session 0 to create a lead character, discuss the mechanics of the game, lay down some formats, and create some key initiatives. Enjoy and keep your eye on the High Plains Samurai website for future instalments.

Misdirected Mark Takes On High Plains Samurai

MMPFeatured-400x319It’s been a very exciting couple of weeks for the One Land and now the first episode has dropped on your favourite pod catchers. The trio of Phil, Chris, and Bob from the Misdirected Mark Podcast are playing a 3-episode actual play of High Plains Samurai: Legends! If there was ever a group that would be the target audience for this game, it’s the folks at MMP (who have been incredibly helpful and awesome about this game).

It’s a unique new format and the first time they’ve ever done it on their show, which makes us extra proud to be the premier game of their new AP segment. Modelled after the Walking Eye podcast, the trio plays 20-minute scenes of the game before taking a sidebar to discuss the mechanics for a total of two scenes per episode. Afterwards, they will dedicate an episode to discuss a particular aspect or mechanic from the game. After far as APs go, this is about as in-depth as you can get with a good assortment of fight scenes and dialogue scenes to highlight the core mechanics of the game.

Check out the first session of High Plains Samurai on the Misdirected Mark Podcast. You can also catch the third session live on Twitch this coming Tuesday, May 8th at 8:45pm EST.

Hear The Tale of Lucky Lu on Comic Strip AP

Some get lucky in the One Land and find a way to live outside of the warlords’ iron grip. Yet even though their day-to-day lives exist outside of the Five Cities and away from the prying eyes of outcasts from the Wastes, they can never truly live free of these dangers. Take the one they call “Lucky Lu,” for instance. He may live outside of Hunan as a retired watchdog of its master, Grandfather, but is not truly free. Deep in the mines that scour the depths of the earth searching for precious minerals and water Grandfather desires so much are Lu’s family and he has been promised they will one day go free. And so Lu runs his small farm and waits for that day.

Until Grandfather arrives with an offer that will change Lu’s life forever.

Broken Ruler Games is pleased to partner with The Gauntlet podcast network and their actual play series, Comic Strip AP, to present a six-part introduction to High Plains Samurai. The first part is available to download now and will be released on a weekly basis leading up to the Kickstarter launch in May 2017. It’s a great opportunity to get a feel for the game’s mechanics, tone, and style, regardless of whether or not you’ve downloaded the free Rehearsal Edition playtest copy or are discovering HPS for the first time. Enjoy!

The Golden Box: A High Plains Samurai Radio Drama/Actual Play

golden-box-title-768x462

Openly Gamer Theatre has created something truly incredible that’s a great way to learn what it’s like to play High Plains Samurai. The Golden Box is a combination radio drama/actual play recording for a previous version of HPS (something like Version 0.8 where players would roll against their own Difficulty, which has now been changed to rolling against the target’s Defence). If you’re on the fence about this game or want to hear their version of this Tarantino-esque gathering of bounty hunters all trying to acquire the same artefact in Hunan, click here and let the story begin.
