About

Broken Ruler Games is a tabletop game development studio and personal imprint of Todd Crapper (“The Warden”), an award-winning tabletop game/production designer and writer with over 20 years experience in the field. Should that matter to you? Sure, it would be nice, but I’d rather let my work stand for itself.

BRG is all about one thing: breaking all the rules. So much so that it’s our tagline. That means building new games and systems from the ground up, venturing into new territories and finding new methods of playing and running exciting games between friends and strangers alike. It started in 2011 when BRG was formed and work began on our first game, Killshot, which went on to win a Judges Spotlight Award from the ENnies in 2013… and that’s just our first foray into the field. Since then, BRG has gone on to publish over a dozen unique titles from high-action fantasy mash-ups to grim and realistic larps.  If you haven’t heard of them, we’ve packed as much detail as possible into this site to tell you all about it.

Is there more to tell you about Broken Ruler Games? I could probably go on for a while, but that’s why we built this site – for you to poke around and see for yourself. If you have any questions, post them in the comments for each post and page and I’ll personally answer them as soon as I can. Until then, it’s time to build your next game.

Sincerely,

Todd Crapper

(P.S. Every page you’ll find on this site is written by me and is unedited. Ok, maybe some of the pages have been edited, but those are the actual content pages for products such as Killshot. The majority of the posts made to this site should be viewed as blog posts – just read and enjoy, put the red pen away. See? We’re breaking the rules already.)

  1. Dear Broken Ruler Games:

I know that once upon a time, you used to host some old d20 supplements on your pages at DriveThruRPG.com and RPGNow.com that Emerald Press had created back in the day such as Modern Campaign Options: Treasure Hunter and the Quest of the Ancients adventure modules The Mystery and the Tomb, Spoils of War, and Nemesis. However, I don’t ever remember you featuring Black Caesar’s Cache, which was also supposed to be a part of Emerald Press’ QA lineup, or even their 2003 release Knights of the Eternal Order, a then-free eight-page PDF that was written by Shane Garvey (https://www.enworld.org/threads/emerald-press-knights-of-the-eternal-order-pdf.58510/).

Do you perchance still have these supplements in your library at all? Better yet, do you ever plan to rerelease any of Emerald Press’s d20 material on DriveThruRPG? I only ask because I recently purchased Campaign Options: Mazes for D&D 3e and have come to like it quite a bit. If you do have any of Emerald’s material, please don’t hesitate to host it once more, as I know for a fact that I’d surely buy it. Until then, thank you for your time.

    • Actually, DW, bringing back as many of the old Emerald Press products in one or more bundles is actually what’s in motion right now. Particularly because of D&D 50th anniversary and the response to Campaign Options: Mazes recently. Unfortunately, this wouldn’t include any of Shane Garvey’s original works before Todd took over, but the majority of ones mentioned in your comment would be included. It’s all a matter of bundling them and putting together some digital packaging graphics to promote the return of these classic products at a fair price for D&D fans.

That’s a shame. Looks like I missed out on adding the prestige class from Knights of the Eternal Order to my collection.

Then again, I do remember buying Modern Campaign Options: Treasure Hunter back in the day as well as the three adventures I’d mentioned and enjoying them all very much, and if there’s any chance that Black Caesar’s Cache will be coming back with those other four titles, bundle or not, then that’ll be something I’d look forward to. Thanks for answering my question, then, Todd!
